Sa-Shai Daniels' Portfolio
8th Grade
The purpose of this project was for us to relate the things we learned about nutrition in Wellness and Fitness class to things we actually do. During this project I learned that you can eat heathy at fast food places, you just have to pick the right things to eat. For this project we placed the meals that we made into three different catagories. Unhealthy, ok, and healthy. We used a metaphor to compare meals to a stoplight. Unhealthy was read, ok was yellow, and healthy was green. My biggest challenge was making the healthy meal because there were there were so many items to choose from but only a few could be considered healthy. It took me a while but eventually I figured it out.
This project is a really great example of inquiry because it brought up a lot of questions about what kinds of things people put in themselves. It's one thing to hear a teacher say that fast food is unhealthy, but it's unathother to actually look at the facts and realize what people are doing to themselves when they eat those sort of things. In this project I researched the fast food place "Sonic". The worst meal that I could think of was a super sonic double cheese burger with mayo, a large order of tater tots with chili and cheese, and a large m&m sonic blast. This meal has 4,060 calories and 248 grams of fat. The healthiest meal that I made was one grilled chicken wrap, a bottle of water, and sliced apples. This meal has only 500 calories and 14 grams of fat. And the yellow meal I thought of was a corn dog, a small order of tater tots, and one powerade. The yellow meal has 530 calories and 23 grams of fat. The quality that I would relate this project to is inquiry because throughout the project I had to question what people feed themselves on a daily basis.
