Experiences

Wright Lead

Wright Lead is a 2 week youth leadership program that takes place in South Africa. Its’ goal is to get teens involved in the improvement of their community. I have worked with the program since 2010. In the beginning I'd help with whatever was needed. Later on as I got more involved I took care of serving lunches to the students. I also helped with set up and clean up. When I started high school I was able to take part in the training as a student. I hope to one day become a facilitator.

Debate Club

My school's debate club just started this year so we're still piecing things together. It's been really fun to build a club from the ground up. Our debates also cover a wide range of topics so it never gets boring. I really enjoy this club because it helps me understand the views of others, even if I don't agree with them.

Paris, France

The summer of my Freshman year of high school I went on a trip to Paris, France with my family. Paris is a beautiful place. Going there was like having every childhood dream come true at once.

De-Fi

DE-FI stands for Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator. They are one of the few fashion magazines in Dayton. I began interning with them in September of my junior year of high school. I have continued a relationship with them since. I have worked with them on three casting calls and I’ve modeled at one of their shows. During the casting calls I helped direct, measure, and register models. I also was present at meeting as a note taker. I plan to work with them more throughout my last year.

South African Safaris

I travel to South Africa every summer, and one of the things my family likes to do is take a week and go on a safari. I love animals of all shapes and sizes and there is nothing better than getting to see them in their natural habitat instead of in a zoo. It can be a little scary sometimes and you have to be careful, but it is a very rewarding experience that I won't soon forget.

Harambee Coffee Roasters Coop

Harambee Coffee Roasters Coop is a start up coffee coop whose goal is to help employ African immigrants and get them involved with a product that is deeply rooted in African history. I interned for them the summer following my sophomore year of high school. My job was to create a simple website for them to build on. I loved working with them because I enjoyed hearing their stories. I find the experiences of others fascinating especially when the differ from my own drastically.

Women In STEM

I go to a STEM school so it is only fitting that we would have a Women in STEM program. Even though I'm not interested in pursuing a career in a STEM field I still love any program that empowers women and supports equality. So I joined because I was a big believer in the message, and the content wasn't that boring either.

The Dalai Lama

When I was a freshman I went to Kentucky to hear the Dalai Lama speak. I am so thankful that I was able to have this experience. It is something most people only dream of and I was lucky enough to hear his words first hand.

Community Alliance

Community Alliance is a club dedicated to learning about other people’s culture. It takes place every Friday after school. Different members of the club take turns giving presentations over different topics. Sometimes we spend time learning about different religions and other times we talk about food and music. The club allows us to delve into one another’s backgrounds so that we can better understand each other.

Key Club

Key Club puts on school events to raise money for charities. I’ve worked on events like game night, change wars, winter formal, and blood drive. Students are separated into groups that work on specific projects. We also decide on what will be done with the proceeds. Last year during change wars my group decided to donate the money to Syrian refugees. We also volunteer at local charity events, for the past two years I’ve stuffed trauma dolls a children's hospital.
