Voki

 For this project we made avatars for ourselves on a website called Voki. This was a Chinese project, and we were doing it so that we could have a fun way of describing ourselves in Chinese. We talked about things like our age, our family, our pets, and even our hobbies. The first step in this project was making our avatars. It was enjoyable because we could make them look however we wanted; I could make it look like me, or I could make it look like a cartoon character. The next thing we did was write a paragraph in Chinese describing the basics of our life. Then we recorded ourselves reading the paragraph in Voki. When we were done we’d made an avatar that could recite the paragraphs that we had created.

There were quite a few struggles that I had during this project. My biggest problem was when I didn’t know how translate some of the things I needed to say into Chinese. It wasn’t too hard overcome this because all I had to do was search through the text book until I found the answer to my question. The most important thing that I learned was how to speak Chinese in fluid sentences, instead of just small independent sentence fragments. I believe that this is going to help me greatly when it comes to speaking conversational Chinese. I’ve often struggled to make my words flow, but this project has helped me to practice my speaking. I feel a lot more confident now that I’ve done the Voki project.

The DRSS qualities that I utilized the most during this project were communication and creativity. Half of this project was about describing ourselves in another language, and language is how we communicate with each other. This project was basically about communicating in a new way. The other quality that I used was creativity, and I used because the other half of this project was about creating something in whatever way we wanted to. Creativity is all about letting your imagination rule your actions, and that is what we did when we were making our avatars. We were being creative just by enjoying the project that we were doing. That was really the great part of this project, it was fun because we could make our avatars however we wanted to. It’s not something that we get to do often in school, but when we do it’s something to treasure.
